Pat Adams

Pat Adams, a native of Thibodaux, Louisiana, recently retired (again) after a long and rewarding career in child nutrition programs. Pat was already a teacher when she was recruited to be the assistant supervisor in school food service in Terrebonne Parish in Houma, Louisiana, in 1979, and was promoted to supervisor in 1984. She remained with Terrebonne Parish until 1997, when she retired the first time and went to work for the Archdiocese of New Orleans school nutrition program. Pat again retired in 2009 to pursue other interests. A water quality index for use with diatoms in the assessment of rivers

Water quality is commonly reported with respect to the minerals that comprise the total dissolved solids, often together with COD, BOD, pH and other components. For ease of use by consumers, the quality parameters are mostly related to usage, i.e. water quality for domestic use, livestock or irrigation, etc. When diatom populations are used as water quality indicators a different system is necessary because diatoms are mostly good indicators of the total dissolved solids. A system to report water quality as an index or class is proposed using data collected from the Swartkops River system, which has pristine headwaters but which becomes progressively polluted downstream. The data included in the index encompass water quality values that cover more than 90% of the 212 river sites sampled from all the phytogeographical areas of South Africa. Sensitivity of IceCube-DeepCore to neutralino dark matter in the MSSM-25

We analyse the sensitivity of IceCube-DeepCore to annihilation of neutralino dark matter in the solar core, generated within a 25 parameter version of the minimally supersymmetric standard model (MSSM-25). We explore the 25-dimensional parameter space using scanning methods based on importance sampling and using DarkSUSY 5.0.6 to calculate observables. Our scans produced a database of 6.02 million parameter space points with neutralino dark matter consistent with the relic density implied by WMAP 7-year data, as well as with accelerator searches. We performed a model exclusion analysis upon these points using the expected capabilities of the IceCube-DeepCore Neutrino Telescope. We show that IceCube-DeepCore will be sensitive to a number of models that are not accessible to direct detection experiments such as SIMPLE, COUPP and XENON100, indirect detection using Fermi-LAT observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies, nor to current LHC searches.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures. Evaluating scenarios to reduce phosphorus transport in surface waters from slurry applications in temperate grasslands

Publication history: Accepted - 7 April 2022; Published online - 30 May 2022.This study evaluates a range of scenarios to reduce soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) losses using the surface runoff phosphorus transport model (Surphos) to simulate the application of liquid manure (slurry) to grassland catchments. Surphos was applied using data from two contrasting sites in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It explored scenarios that investigated changes to the timing of slurry applications, based both on policy (i.e. a “closed” period where regulations prohibit any slurry spreading) and on climate-based restrictions, where soil moisture and antecedent rainfall were important factors. The observed data showed a considerable spatial variability in runoff at both sites, which resulted in a corresponding variable range of SRP losses predicted by the model. However, at both sites the model results showed that maintaining a closed period led to a greater reduction in SRP losses than opening this period up to slurry applications under climate-based restrictions.This work was supported in part by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) under an Evidence and Innovation Grant [Award No. 17-4-08]

Mental Health and Well-Being in Mothers of Children With Rare Genetic Syndromes Showing Chronic Challenging Behavior::A Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Study

It is well documented that mothers of children with challenging behavior (CB) experience elevated levels of stress and that this persists over time, but less is known about the experience of mothers of children with rare genetic syndromes. This article describes 2 studies, 1 cross-sectional and 1 longitudinal, comparing well-being in mothers of children with Angelman, Cornelia de Lange and Cri du Chat syndrome who have either shown chronic CB (n = 18) or low/no CB (n = 26) in the preceding 7 years. The presence of chronic, long-term CB increased maternal stress but not depression or anxiety, and did not influence positive well-being. Animación sociocultural mediante el deporte en la Unidad de Salud Mental del establecimiento carcelario La Modelo de Bogotá

Servicio Social ComunitarioInvestigación realizada tuvo como objetivo la realización de una animación sociocultural en el establecimiento carcelario la Modelo ubicado en la ciudad de Bogotá- Colombia, específicamente en la unidad de salud mental, a través de metodologías participativas y alternativas de intervención como el Aprendizaje Servicio Solidario (ASS); de esta manera fue posible identificar en un primer momento algunas de las necesidades sentidas, percibidas e inferidas, tanto de la institución, como de las personas privadas de la libertad (PPL), a través del arte y el deporte. En un segundo momento se desarrolló una intervención a través de las metodologías ya mencionadas, utilizando el deporte como herramienta principal, buscando potencializar en los internos diferentes alternativas para la solución de problemas y la transformación de las necesidades evaluadas. En cuanto a este último objetivo de la intervención no todas las necesidades pudieron tener alguna modificación, puesto que algunas de ellas se encuentran vinculadas con lineamientos institucionales fuera del alcance de esta investigación. Para este estudio no se contó con una muestra estable, ya que para cada sesión los PPL podían elegir su participación de manera voluntaria y en casos particulares se evidenciaban traslados de patio o de establecimiento carcelario y, además, se presentaron situaciones de inseguridad en el patio, que no permitieron el desarrollo adecuado de las últimas sesiones de intervención.140 p.1.
